Program Description
The goal of the graduate programs in Art History at Rutgers is to impart rigorous training for innovative research to the next generation of scholars, curators, cultural heritage practitioners, and art world professionals. The program puts a strong emphasis on cross-disciplinary inquiry and encourages students to explore connections between research and practice, and between scholarly writing and public-facing advocacy. Students in the program have been highly successful in garnering prestigious grants and awards from such institutions as Fulbright, Kress, Mellon, DAAD and the Smithsonian, and alumni have gone on to build successful careers as university faculty and museum curators and directors, both in the NYC metropolitan area and at cultural centers throughout the world.
Prospective students for the MA programs are strongly advised to contact the Graduate Program Director to determine the suitability of the program before applying. Prospective students for the Ph.D. program are encouraged to reach out to faculty members in their proposed area of research who might serve as prospective advisers. Prospective students for Cultural Heritage and Preservation Studies are encouraged to reach out to the director of CHAPS.
