Programs: Pre-health Master's | Research focused Master's | Dual degree Master's program | Multidisciplinary Ph.D. | M.D./Ph.D. | Certificate
The Newark Health Sciences Campus of Rutgers SGS is located in the University Heights section of Newark, NJ. We share our campus with the Rutgers New Jersey Medical School (NJMS) and Rutgers School of Dental Medicine (RSDM). We are an urban campus located minutes from Newark Penn Station which provides easy access to New York City as well as other major cities on the east coast.
Our Master's program is designed to prepare students to strengthen their profile and be more competitive when applying for medical school, dental school, physician’s assistant school, podiatry school and other health related professional schools. Eligible students can also take courses with medical and dental students in the Rutgers NJMS or RDSM. Ph.D. students are provided academic direction and flexibility through a Multidisciplinary Ph.D. program that builds on the basic and translational research strengths of the faculty of NJMS and RDSM.
Graduate students in the Master's program graduate with either a thesis-based Master of Science (MS) or a non-thesis Master of Biomedical Science (MBS) degree. The Master's program on Newark Health Science campus offers Fall and Spring Admissions. The application deadline for Spring 2025 semester is December 01, 2024. The application deadline for Fall 2025 semester is July 15, 2025.

Multidisciplinary PhD Program
Biomedical researchBased on their interests, students entering the multidisciplinary program will choose one of four educational tracks that focus on molecular biosciences (MBGC), integrative biosciences (CBNP), infectious disease and immunity (I3), or biomedical engineering (BME). Each track provides a structured education in one of four broad biomedical subject areas and yet encourages students to develop their own curriculum on their specialized research interest. Faculty mentors may be members of more than one educational track, thereby allowing students greater flexibility in choosing the track that fits their educational needs. In addition, students may apply for consideration by more than one track, and it is possible to move between tracks once enrolled.
M.D./Ph.D. Program
The Interdisciplinary MD/PhD Program is designed as a seven-year integrated experience. The first two years consist primarily of pre-clinical medical school courses. Laboratory rotations are performed in the summer prior to entering medical school or following the first year. Years 3-5 generally involve full time research towards the PhD degree in a laboratory of your choice. The final two years of the program focus on clinical experience. Coordination between the clinical and research years is designed to facilitate a smooth transition between aspects of the Program.
DPT/PhD Program
Individually, the DPT program at SHRP is a full time three-year 110 credit graduate program that prepares students to enter the physical therapy profession. The program has been continuously accredited by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education since 1980, and has just been re-accredited for another ten-year period valid through 2019. The program combines didactic courses that span areas of anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, ethics, professional behavior, evidence-based practice, critical reasoning, diagnosis, and interventions, and is followed with 1 year of clinical clerkship.
