Three Minute Thesis (3MT)

Advancing Research Communication at SGS

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition is a central component of Grad CareerCraft: Tools for Diverse Professional Futures, the School of Graduate Studies’ initiative to prepare graduate students for a wide range of professional pathways. By challenging participants to present their research in just three minutes using a single static slide, 3MT develops the ability to communicate complex ideas with clarity, precision, and purpose. These are core competencies for success in academic, industry, and public-facing roles.

Through this structured format, 3MT strengthens students’ skills in synthesis, audience awareness, and narrative construction. Participants learn to distill their work to its essential contributions while maintaining rigor, making their research accessible to an educated, non-specialist audience. The competition also provides a high-impact platform for public speaking, helping students build confidence and refine how they present their work in conferences, job talks, and professional settings.

As part of the broader Grad CareerCraft ecosystem, 3MT reinforces the principle that strong research and strong communication are inseparable. It creates an opportunity for students to engage with diverse audiences, receive feedback from judges with varied expertise, and connect with peers across disciplines, all within a rigorous yet supportive environment that reflects the demands of real-world communication.
