Event Description

This workshop will equip PhD students, postdocs, and faculty with practical strategies to strengthen grant and fellowship applications in today’s evolving funding environment. Participants will learn how to frame proposals to align with shifting federal and foundation priorities, craft compelling research narratives, and position their work for maximum impact and competitiveness.

Representatives from Lewis-Burke Associates and the Rutgers Foundation will provide an overview of the current federal research landscape, including key opportunities for fellowships and early-career awards, as well as recent and anticipated policy changes affecting international trainees.

Finally, we will highlight broader trends to watch, including changes in review criteria, increased emphasis on translational impact and data rigor, and evolving expectations around collaboration and research direction. Participants will do a hands-on exercise to frame their research to align with these trends and leave with clear, actionable guidance for navigating funding opportunities and adapting their proposals to a rapidly changing environment.

Premal Shah's career has spanned both academia and industry, he spent over six years as an Assistant Professor of Genetics at Rutgers University, where he was a member of the Human Genetics Institute of New Jersey and led research on the dynamics and evolution of gene regulation and protein synthesis. Since transitioning to industry in 2022, he has held Director-level roles at Ananke Therapeutics and a stealth-mode biotech firm, where he led computational biology, RNA design, and target discovery efforts to advance the next generation of RNA-based therapeutics. SanegeneBio is a global biotech with a singular vision: Best-in-class RNAi medicines. Come learn about the benefits of the Scholar Mentoring Program for Biotechnology (SMDP). This one-year career mentoring program pairs students (including Ph.D. & Post-docs) and early career researchers with industry mentors who work at companies in the medical technology, biotechnology and consumer healthcare industries. With their mentors, Scholars attend a 5-day training session to learn about career opportunities in industry and receive career development coaching. They also attend a major industry conference. This program is a fantastic opportunity that has helped graduate students and postdocs land industry positions!  At this information session, you will also hear from Dustielyn Savage who is the program director for SMDP as well as iJOBS trainees who have done the program. Applicants must be eligible to work permanently in the United States without needing a visa or sponsorship.
