Margo Weitzman Awarded Rome Prize

The School of Graduate Studies proudly celebrates Margo H. Weitzman, a doctoral candidate in Art History, who has been awarded a 2025–2026 Rome Prize by the American Academy in Rome.

The Rome Prize supports innovative work in the arts, humanities, and sciences, providing recipients with the time, space, and inspiration to pursue their projects while in residence on the Academy’s historic 11-acre campus in Rome. Approximately 35 Rome Prizes are awarded yearly through a rigorous national competition. This year’s competition received 990 applications from 44 U.S. states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, and 17 countries, with an acceptance rate of just 3.54 percent.

Margo will be in residence in Rome for up to ten months, where she will continue her dissertation research, "Ekphrasis, the Senses, and Geographic Imaginaries: India Mediated by Early Modern Italian Merchants in the Medici Courts." Her selection highlights the strength of her scholarly work and the excellence of the Art History program at Rutgers.

This is the second consecutive year that a Rutgers Art History graduate student has been awarded the Rome Prize, following Julia Katz’s recognition last year. Margo’s achievement places her among a distinguished cohort of scholars and artists whose work at the Academy continues to shape the intellectual and cultural life of the United States.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Margo and look forward to seeing the impact of her work on art history and beyond.
