Two School of Graduate Studies (SGS) students were recognized with this year’s SGS Community Engagement Award at the Collaborative Center for Community Engagement’s End-of-the-Year Celebration, held on April 9, 2026, at the Rutgers Club. Assistant Dean Dr. Ramazan Gungor presented the awards on behalf of SGS.
Eleanor J. Agosta (MD/PhD, Medicine / Cellular and Molecular Pharmacology)
Eleanor has demonstrated exceptional leadership as a physician-scientist in training, combining high-impact research with sustained mentorship and service within the Rutgers community. Her work reflects a deep commitment to advancing both science and student development.
John Paul Sloan (PhD, Literatures in English)
John’s work brings together rigorous scholarship and meaningful public engagement. His research in Black literary and philosophical traditions is complemented by active involvement in community-based initiatives in Newark focused on justice, empowerment, and civic participation.

Both recipients exemplify the values of ethical, collaborative community engagement and the role of graduate education in advancing the public good.
This year’s nominations highlighted the wide range of ways SGS graduate students are making an impact in their communities at the local, national, and global levels. SGS extends its appreciation to all nominees for their meaningful contributions.
