This active learning workshop for PhD students, Postdoctoral Fellows and faculty will use techniques and case study discussions in breakout sessions to teach tools and skills to better mentor undergraduate students in a research setting.  Attendees will also reflect upon approaches they would use to mentor trainees and employees when  they are running a lab or research group in the future. An opportunity to earn a Microbadge in Mentoring Undergrads will be available for those who wish to follow up with additional activities. The workshop is offered By Rutgers SGS in collaboration with RUYES.

If you want to learn how to write a paper that reviewers will love, this workshop is for you! In this session, we will discuss the broad overview of scholarly publishing as well as the latest trends and developments in the industry. We will go through an in depth outline of the publishing process from how to pick the appropriate journal for your work, to preparing the elements of your paper, to submission and navigating the peer review process, and the post-acceptance process.  We will also cover elements such as ethics in publishing, copyright, open access, and beyond. The session will be lead by Sofia Garakyaraghi, Ph.D. Associate Publisher, Editorial Development.

Event Description

Each faculty recruiting season, many applicants ask, “What is a chalk talk?” The chalk talk is many things—a sales pitch, a teaching demonstration, a barrage of questions, and a description of a future research program. The chalk talk is arguably the most important component of a faculty search interview. Yet few postdocs or grad students receive training or practice in giving a chalk talk. This workshop will cover the basics of chalk talk design and preparation, as well as covering commonly questions asked by search committees. This workshop will be delivered by Erik Snapp from the HHMI who has written many articles on how to land academic positions.

Graduate students and postdoctoral fellows will learn about constructing an NIH fellowship application. This is also a very valuable workshop for graduate students who are writing their thesis proposals. 

March 3 from 12-1:30pm

This session will be held in-person in Piscataway at EOSHI and New Brunswick at CINJ. Lunch will be served at both locations. Others can participate via Zoom.

There will also be a second optional session on March 16 from 12-1:30pm for those who want to receive feedback on their Specific Aims pages.
