Eligibility for Summer 2025
U.S. citizen, permanent resident, or eligible to work in the U.S. (For NSF REUs and some other grant-funded RISE partners, only citizens or permanent residents are eligible.)
Interest in considering a future PhD program
Completion of at least the sophomore year by June 2025. Occasionally, we consider current first-years with extraordinary credentials.
Minimum GPA of 3.0 (on 4.0 scale). Admission is highly selective, and successful applicants typically have excellent academic records.
We Particularly Encourage:
Groups underrepresented in their fields of study
Students from economically/educationally disadvantaged backgrounds
First generation to attend college
Students attending predominantly undergraduate institutions with limited research opportunities
Non-traditional students
Individuals who have faced life challenges
RISE has rolling admissions. Acceptance is highly competitive, and early applications (February 1) receive priority review.
November 1 – Application site opens
January – Early application review starts
Early February – Initial offers extended
February to March – Admission continues until all places are filled, typically mid March
