iJOBS Career Panel: Research Jobs in Government Agencies (NIH, FDA, CDC, NJ DOH)

For people who want to stay involved in research but not become faculty in academia, government agencies represent another very attractive alternative to the biopharma industry.  We will hear from amazing PhD level scientists who have all had very successful careers doing research at either the NIH, Food and Drug Administration, Center for Disease Control or NJ Department of Health. Get their advice on how to find and make the transition from graduate school or postdoc into these government roles that have a direct impact on human health.

Event Description

Ask a room full of scientists, “Who writes slowly?” and almost every hand will go up; we seem to believe in a mythic ‘average’ writer who is somehow able to do easily what we find difficult.  This workshop focuses on developing strategies for writing; it aims to dispel many of the misconceptions and practices that prevent writers from working effectively.  We consider current best practices for improving your own writing and for working more productively with coauthors at any level. Topics include getting started, giving feedback, responding to comments, and revising effectively. 

We will also cover how to Make Sense of the Science. All too often, the textual portions of scientific writing seem to be a data dump of one observation after another. In this workshop, we look at how readers’ expectations for context and emphasis can guide writers toward logical development of the scientific substance.

This hands-on workshop will be led by renowned science writing Judy Swan, PhD, Associate Director for Writing in Science and Engineering at Princeton University.

We are excited to invite current graduate students, postdocs, alumni, industry professionals, and faculty to attend our annual iJOBS symposium. Our keynote speaker, will be Marisa Dolled-Filhart who has held many positions in pharma companies and is currently Global Porgram Lead at Daiichi Sankyo. We will also have a team of HR professionals, from Regeneron talk about "Navigating Your Career Journey".  You will hear an update of iJOBS activities and outcomes followed by our current Phase 3 trainees sharing about their iJOBS shadowing experiences and coursework. Finally, there will be a networking lunch and an opportunity for industry professionals to share their advice with current trainees.

It’s exciting time in clinical research & operations – managing trials for new therapeutics to benefit patients, incorporating new technologies such as AI and more.  “ClinOps” professionals must have strong project management skills to successfully and strategically manage the many moving parts in clinical trials, among them the ability to: balance scope, budget and time; lead cross-functional teams; communicate with stakeholders; solve problems and manage risk.  But how do you position yourself to break into this field from an academic scientific background?  Join PMINJ to hear Cortney Miller, Ph.D., PMP share her journey from earning a Ph.D. in Neurobiology & Neurosciences to her current role as Associate Director of Clinical Operations at Dyne Therapeutics, with career pathways and practical approaches to begin entering this field.  Dr. Miller’s presentation will also include a personal branding exercise to illustrate how the skills you’ve developed, including your foundational project management skills, can “get you in the door” of this field.
