We are excited to invite current graduate students, postdocs, alumni, industry professionals, and faculty to attend our annual iJOBS symposium. Our keynote speaker, will be Karen Akinsanya, PhD President, head of therapeutics R&D and chief strategy officer, partnerships at Schrodinger who will deliver a talk on "New Dimensions: How Computation is Accelerating Drug Discovery". Dr. Akinsanya leads the company’s therapeutics research and development organization. She is also responsible for therapeutics business development, ventures strategy, and outreach as well as growth initiatives that leverage synergies between the company’s therapeutics and software businesses. She has more than 30 years of experience spanning academia, pharmaceutical R&D and business development. We will also have a professional development activity. You will also hear an update of iJOBS activities and outcomes followed by our current Phase 3 trainees sharing about their iJOBS shadowing experiences and coursework. Finally, there will be a networking lunch and an opportunity for industry professionals to share their advice with current trainees.

iJOBS Careers Panel: Project Management

Project management is a skill that we all develop during our PhD education while working on our thesis project and it is in high demand in industry settings! Olajompo (Jompo) Moloye-Olabisi, PhD and Yung Chan will guide attendees through a structured, project-management-based approach to transitioning into industry. Topics include creating a career timeline, identifying target sectors, crafting impactful resumes, executing a focused job search, and interview preparation. They will also share their own career journeys through R&D and supply chain as real-world examples to illustrate the process.

Sinai to the Vice President of Cancer Genomics at a spin out startup called Sema4 and now to the Senior Director of Computational Biology, Discovery Research at Veracyte with a focus Next-Generation Sequencing to create cancer genomic tests that complete the diagnostic picture.

Faculty Workshop in Mentoring Biomedical PhD Students and Postdocs

- The NIH requires faculty to be trained in how to mentor PhD students and postdocs.
- Even faculty who have mentored dozens of graduate students and postdocs can improve their skills in mentoring.
- Lessons and interactive case studies will be from the Center for the Improvement of Mentored Experiences in Research (CIMER).
- An additional focus this year will be on navigating power dynamics in academic labs.
- Interactions with fellow faculty will help you reflect on various mentoring situations and enhance your readiness to work with mentees and anticipate new situations.
- All faculty are invited and junior faculty are strongly encouraged to attend.
- Your attendance at these workshops make our programs more competitive for training grants
