Hi everyone! My name is Katelyn Marshall, and I’m currently a 3rd year PhD candidate in the Biochemistry department at Rutgers University. From a young age, I have been fascinated with learning how things work, what makes them go. This curiosity fit in perfectly with science, and led me to pursue chemistry and biochemistry for my undergraduate studies. My love for research was ignited during my first undergraduate research experience working with Xenopus laevis tadpoles as a protein expression system. That love for science is what now fuels my passion for research, along with a strong desire to contribute to the existing wealth of scientific knowledge. I am currently in Dr. Madura’s lab where I use yeast as a model system to study the ubiquitin-proteasome system. I am specifically interested in using endogenous proteasome substrates to determine the site of proteasome-mediated protein degradation in the cell. I greatly enjoy working with yeast to do basic science which has great potential to have wide-reaching effects on human health. Besides enjoying science, my hobbies include crocheting, gaming, and reading. I also delight in time spent with my dutch rabbit, who, at 14, is a marvel of science (as far as I’m concerned). I am looking forward to beginning my journey as a blogger and contributing to the iJOBS blog. I hope to provide helpful insight as I explore career options and develop myself as a researcher.
