This fall, a number of RISE alumni presented their summer research projects at various national conferences. We're proud to highlight their achievements since their summer experience at Rutgers!
American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Annual Meeting 2021 (Nov 5-14th)
In November, RISE 2021 Scholar Fabian Amurrio presented his summer work at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers Annual Student Conference in Boston, MA. His poster was entitled "Microplastic Occurrence in Water Matrices: Metadata Analysis and Occurrence Trends."
Fabian presented the summer research performed under the mentorship of Professor Nicole Fahrenfeld, Department of Civil & Environmental Engineering, and in collaboration with the RISE partner REU site, Green Energy Technology for Undergraduates Program (“GET UP”).
Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS)
On November 10-13, RISE alumni from multiple summers attended and presented posters at ABRCMS.
RISE 2021 Scholars Mickayla Bacorn, Taina Moore, and Midori Flores all participated as E-Poster Presenters, as did RISE 2020 Scholars Ronaldo Franjul, Lisby Santiago, MaryAgnes Balogun, and Luz Alfaro. Taina presented her work "The Therapeutic Potential of Nitrated Fatty Acids in Acute Lung Injury," conducted in the lab of Dr. Andrew Gow, EOHSI/Pharmacy. Midori presented her work "Visualizing Polystyrene (PS) Microplastics in C. elegans" based on research conducted under the mentorship of Dr. Lauren Aleksunes, EOHSI/Pharmacy.
We would like to especially congratulate Mickayla Bacorn for her winning poster in the Computational and Systems Biology category on her research she conducted this past summer, entitled "Biochemical analysis of the active site evolution for SARS-CoV-2 and other coronaviruses." She was mentored by Professors Sagar Khare and Stephen Burley along with Christine Zardecki in the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology.
SACNAS's National Diversity in STEM (NDiSTEM) Conference
Three RISE 2021 alumni presented posters at the NDiSTEM conference on October 25-29:
Manuela Velez Galindo, who was mentored by Dr. Kasia Bieszczad, Behavioral and Systems Neuroscience
Josue Grajeda, mentored by Dr. WeiWei Xie, Chemistry and Chemical Biology
Mickayla Bacorn, mentored by Dr. Sagar Khare, Dr. Stephen Burley, and Christine Zardecki, Chemistry & Chemical Biology
Middle States Division of the Association of American Geographers (MSAAG) Annual Meeting
We are excited that on October 29th, 2021 RISE alum Laurian Rosa-Rosa presented her summer research at the Middle States Division of the Association of American Geographers (MSAAG) Annual Meeting. Laurian was mentored by Dr. Kevon Rhiney and Dr. Andrea Marston from the Department of Geography. Check out Laurian's poster, "Land use contestations over state-led efforts to privatize beaches in PR post-María," here.
