The IMSD program is hosting a Bootcamp for incoming IMSD students. The program will include two workshops: “Learning How to Learn”, which will be presented by Hanin Rashid, Ph.D. Associate Director, Office for Advancing Learning, Teaching, and Assessment (ALTA), Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry Cognitive Skills Program RWJMS, and “Managing Emotional Wellness”, which will be presented by Dana Simons, MA, LPC, NCC, Community-Based Counselor, Rutgers Student Health.
It is time for personal reflection.
What were your expectations as you entered graduate school? How have you been doing?
Are you satisfied with your life/work balance? If not, what can you change?
We look forward to hearing your thoughts!
You are invited to our first Annual IMSD Symposium. IMSD students + Friends in year 2 and above will give 5-min presentations of their work. Dr. Maribel Vazquez, from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Rutgers, will give the Keynote address. Everyone is invited to a BBQ that will take place immediately after the event.
The workshop is open to all IMSD students + friends, and advisors. The workshop will be facilitated by Beth Tracy, former Director of the Office of Faculty Development at Rutgers.
We have all experienced the "my experiment did not work". It is the unavoidable reality of doing research. However, many frustrating moments, days, months and at times even years, can be avoided by a collective effort to be true to yourself, your colleagues, and the scientific community at large. At this meeting we will discuss best practices that will help you make contributions that really count.
Research can be challenging. Learning new techniques can be tough. When experiments fail, which they often do, it can be discouraging. The old sage advice is to develop thick skin, put your head down, and push forward. But is this the best way to succeed?
In this session, we will explore how the concept of “self-efficacy”, which is your belief in your ability to succeed, and discuss strategies to keep you on your road to your success.
IMSD invites two of our senior graduate students, Khea Wolff and Stephania Guzman, to present their ongoing work:
Khea Wolff, a 6th year graduate student in the Plant Biology graduate program, will present her work entitled: "An investigation into the pharmacological activity of an isothiocyanate-rich moringa seed extract".
Stephanie Guzman, a 5th year graduate student in the Molecular Pharmacology graduate program will present her work entitled: "Targeting hepatic kisspeptin receptor ameliorates non-alcoholic fatty liver disease"
We are very excited to invite you to a panel discussion with Rutgers STEM faculty from groups under-represented in the sciences. Come to hear their stories and learn from their experiences.
Panelists:
We will discuss how graduate school life has changed from last year and some of the challenges you may be facing, including how much you feel you are in control of your time and whether you have established good lines of communication with your PI and lab colleagues.
