Event Description

Dr. Haber studies the cellular processes that repair DNA double strand breaks (DSBs). He pioneered the use of a single targeted DSB to tease out details of the repair pathways in yeast. His studies have had a profound impact on the entire field, including the repair of human DNA and genome editing. His most recent work continues to identify processing steps of DSBs and the genetic factors that influence them.  

Dr. Haber is the Abraham and Etta Goodman Professor of Biology at Brandeis University. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and a recipient of the Thomas Hunt Morgan Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Genetics by the Genetics Society of America. He is an avid collaborator and a generous authority on all things genetic. His scientific presentations are both engaging and accessible to a wide audience.

Figures that are clear, intuitive and robust to misinterpretation are essential to your success. In this interactive session, we will learn from Sarah Treit, PhD of FiguresFirst about the elements of successful data visualization, effective figure design, and formatting for clarity. Examples from published literature and hands-on exercises are used to illustrate best practices and help identify potential pitfalls. This workshop is not software specific so you will benefit regardless of the statistical or graphing program you use.

Learn how to start those difficult conversations either with your PI about doing an internship and setting workplace boundaries, or your future boss about compensation packages and project timeline discrepancies.  iJOBS has teamed up with ASM in hosting a series of workshops dedicated to helping graduate students and postdoctoral scientists develop critical interpersonal skills required to work on teams to succeed in both academic and non-academic careers. Having an awareness of Emotional Intelligence will help you learn to work with others and network even in uncomfortable situations.  Juliet Chin Hart who now trains industry professionals will lead this session in collaboration with ASM Young Ambassador Samantha Avina.

Shanique Edwards, an alum of Rutgers PhD programs will talk about how career transitions are easier when you are intentional about them and approach them strategically. Having a plan for your career transition is especially important if you’re the first one to make your way into a particular career path, or if you’re unsure about your long-term career goals. This workshop will help you navigate significant career transitions, including moving from being an graduate student to a postdoc, or a trainee to a faculty/employee, or even stepping into your first leadership role. In this session you will gain strategies for (i) preparing for, and successfully transitioning to a new role; (ii) taking advantage of, and creating opportunities; (iii) how to find and leverage your unique advantage.

Event Description

This active learning workshop for PhD students, Postdoctoral Fellows and faculty will use techniques and case study discussions in breakout sessions to teach tools and skills to better mentor undergraduate students in a research setting.  Attendees will also reflect upon approaches they would use to mentor trainees and employees when  they are running a lab or research group in the future. An opportunity to earn a Microbadge in Mentoring Undergrads will be available for those who wish to follow up with additional activities. The workshop is offered By Rutgers SGS in collaboration with RUYES.

If you want to learn how to write a paper that reviewers will love, this workshop is for you! In this session, we will discuss the broad overview of scholarly publishing as well as the latest trends and developments in the industry. We will go through an in depth outline of the publishing process from how to pick the appropriate journal for your work, to preparing the elements of your paper, to submission and navigating the peer review process, and the post-acceptance process.  We will also cover elements such as ethics in publishing, copyright, open access, and beyond. The session will be lead by Sofia Garakyaraghi, Ph.D. Associate Publisher, Editorial Development.
