Event Description

The NIH is requiring faculty to be trained in how to mentor PhD students. We are therefore offering these workshops for faculty in the biological sciences with new case studies each time. This will make our programs more competitive for training grants and pre-doctoral fellowships. All faculty are invited and junior faculty are strongly encouraged to attend.

Topics and interactive case studies led by Jim Millonig and Janet Alder will include: Rationale for mentoring the mentors Academic resources offered in biomedical sciences at Rutgers Managing student projects (e.g. responsibilities of mentor and mentee, expectations for graduation)Funding for students (e.g. internal and external sources)Professional development for students (e.g. Individual Developmental Plans, career advising)Student issues (e.g. identifying mental health issues, avoiding bias, and improving communication)

Deans Millonig and Alder will present an overview of programs and world class resources available to Rutgers graduate students including an active career exploration and development program called iJOBS.

Current PhD and MD/PhD students will have a panel discussion so you can have your questions answered and learn about programs in:

We are excited to invite current graduate students, postdocs, alumni, industry professionals, and faculty to attend our annual iJOBS symposium. Career coach Juliet Chin Hart will present a workshop on Leadership and Management Skills to improve your influence in the work place.

You will hear an update of iJOBS activities and outcomes followed by our current Phase 3 trainees sharing about their iJOBS shadowing experiences and coursework.  Our keynote speaker, Rutgers alum Tanya Borsuk, PhD will share her perspective on business development in the pharmaceutical industry. Finally, there will be a networking lunch and an opportunity for industry professionals to share their advice with current trainees.

Ray Zhong is the Senior Director of Data Analytics R&D at Real Chemistry. Learn how he has transitioned from a PhD in nerve cell regeneration to a data scientist to his current role. At Real Chemistry Ray brings data analytics and clinical solutions together to drive innovation and leads a cross-functional team to standardize and commercialize the core offering of Real Audiences. He also leads internal initiative to explore and build social analytics capability in the clinical development space and led a digital clinical trial recruitment project to analyze patient profile, design creatives, activate media, and report on the outcomes for a basket of 3 late phase clinical trials.

Event Description

Come in person to meet several Merck PhD level employees representing the following groups: Bioanalytical, ADME, Toxicology Safety, and Pharmacometrics. They will each give a background on their area and talk about their own career paths. Then we will have round table discussions with lunch served where you can network and ask questions.  Next we will hear from Human Resources about some open positions and the skill sets most in demand. Finally, the Merck scientists that include hiring managers will do mock interviews with behavioral based interview questions and review resumes in small groups.
