This past month, Rutgers once again hosted Dr. Randall Ribaudo and Larry Petcovic, the co-founders of SciPhD. SciPhD is a 36-hour training for scientists who are interested in the transition from academic careers to non-academic careers. The course typically takes place over two weekends during the month of February. During this workshop, attendees go through different workshops, team/business building experiences, networking experiences, and much more!

In September 2017, Michael Roach and Henry Sauermann examined the declining interest in academic careers; published in PLOS ONE . One might assume that this decline is due to a difficult job market, however, the authors found that the majority of graduate students who lost interest in academia had other reasons. The question was examined using a longitudinal survey that followed 854 Ph.D. students, in the natural sciences and engineering, from 39 U.S. research universities.

As graduate students, an oft-dreaded question is “When are you graduating?” The pursuit of scientific advancement comes with no roadmaps and the marathon of graduate studies can be particularly challenging in the last leg. When, finally, there is a light at the end of the tunnel, many graduate students discover that there is a more dreadful question waiting for them. What next?

The following is a re-cap of an iJOBS event—Regulatory Writing Workshop—held on January 30^th, 2018 on Busch Campus. Doreen Lechner, director of the Biopharma Educational Initiative and Clinical Trial Sciences Program at Rutgers, moderated the event and provided information on relevant courses offered at the university.
