Training

MD/PhD applicants should have all of the attributes of a successful medical school applicant plus the accumulation of significant research experience.  Most applicants have done a research intensive gap year following their baccalaureate degree and while there is no strict requirement for having published, most of our applicants have had their research published in a peer-reviewed journal.

Continuity of training means integrating your research and clinical experiences.  This integration can take many forms - from shadowing during your PhD phase, working at our student run clinic or doing a clinical rotation before starting your PhD. We work with each student to customize their experience in order to leverage all of the resources that Rutgers, RWJMS and Princeton have to offer.

RWJMS offers a Competency-Based MD Program that delivers Flexible, Integrative and Innovative Medical Education. RWJMS has adopted the Accreditation Committee for Graduate Medical Education competencies (ACGME) to serve as organizational curriculum framework for medical students. The block curriculum integrates basic sciences and clinical medicine around multi-disciplinary themes and common clinical presentations. The innovative teaching methods and technologies promotes learning through discovery and collaboration.

After selecting a lab at Rutgers or Princeton and completing Step 1 of the USMLE medical licensure exams, you will enroll in a graduate program and work toward completing the requirements of that program.  Students have enrolled in many different graduate programs including:
